Economic Violence against the Wife and Social Control Mechanisms in Algeria
Main Article Content
Abstract
Economic violence against wives constitutes one of the forms of domestic violence that undermines family stability and social cohesion. This study examines the concept of economic violence, identifies its main manifestations, underlying causes, and consequences, while highlighting the social control mechanisms this phenomenon within Algerian society from socio-psychological and legal perspectives.
The study revealed that economic violence against wives takes multiple forms, the most prominent of which include the deprivation of financial support and resources, as well as the control and restriction of access to personal property. The findings also demonstrated that economic violence generates various adverse consequences, including anxiety, depression, and a diminished sense of security, in addition to contributing to the deterioration of family relationships and the weakening of both familial and social cohesion. Furthermore, the study concluded that addressing this phenomenon requires the reinforcement of social regulation mechanisms through raising awareness of women's rights, developing family counselling services, and promoting the economic empowerment of wives.
